When I was young, there were two things I always wanted to do. Make and fix things. I always felt happy whenever I see something I made on my own or whenever I solved a problem. I thought engineering is a good field to go into to fulfill my passion.

小さい頃、私は何かを作ったり、直したりすることが大好きでした。自分で作ったものを見ること、直った姿を見ることに喜びを感じていました。エンジニアリングは私のパッションを満たす、一番適した分野だろうと思い、この道に進みました。

I have been working for 4 years now as a Data Center Technician at AWS Japan. My work scope includes troubleshooting and fixing hardware and network issues, install new servers and network equipment, and expansion projects within Data Centers. I love my current role. I get to do what I am passionate about. It has given me many opportunities to learn and improve my skills in troubleshooting hardware issues. Working with other experienced and talented people who share the same interests and goals gives me excitement to go to work everyday. I am also fortunate enough to be a part of a company that embraces diversity and recognizes gender equality.

サーバーエンジニアとして働き始めて、4年が経ちます。トラブルシューティングやハードウェア、ネットワークトラブルの修復、新しいサーバーやネットワーク機器のインストール、データセンターの拡張プロジェクトへの貢献などを行なっています。私は大好きなことを仕事として行なえることに喜びを感じています。ハードウェアのトラブルシューティングを学べ、スキルを向上する機会があり、私と同じ興味や目標を持つ、優秀な人達と一緒に働けることは毎日仕事に行く楽しみにつながります。また、ダイバーシティーを推進し、ジェンダー平等 を推進する会社で働けることは非常に幸運です。

I have always had a love-hate relationship with Math. When I was in College, I had to take up Engineering Probability and Statistics course. At that time, I was not doing well with my exams that my professor even called me out in front of the class saying I was not good enough to pass the course. It stuck with me then, and to be honest I carried it until today. I was sad, humiliated and felt like a failure but instead of indulging to sadness, I strived hard to learn because I wanted to pass the course and be an engineer. I put more effort and time studying theories, concepts and elements of probability and statistics. I asked help and borrowed notes from my classmates. All my efforts paid off in the end, and I passed the course and now an engineer. So, to all of you young girls who are interested in STEM, do not let anyone even yourself make you feel that you can’t do it. Persevere. Do not underestimate your abilities. You don’t need to be perfect you just have to be brave. Do not be afraid to fail because sometimes mistakes can end up to great solutions. Encouragement is also important. Look for role models and meet people with similar passion. You can be the girl who helped make the world a better place to live.

私は昔から、数学と愛憎関係にありました。大学生の頃、工学系確率と統計の授業を受講していましたが、試験で良い点が取れず、クラスのみんなの前で、教授に単位の取得は難しいと言われてしまいました。この出来事は私に突き刺さり、正直に言うと、現時点まで引きずっています。とても悲しく、恥ずかしく、負け犬のように感じましたが、どうしてもエンジニアになりたかったので、悲しみに打ちひしがれるのではなく、単位を取得するために努力しました。苦手な確率と統計学の理論、概念、要素を理解することに時間を費やし、クラスメイトに助けを求め、メモを借りたりしました。最終的に、努力は実り、単位を取得することができ、エンジニアになることができました。

STEMに興味のある若い女の子たちへ：周りの人に、できないと言われたからといって、それを鵜呑みにしてはいけません。あなた自身が持ち合わせている可能性を過小評価してはいけません。パーフェクトである必要はありません。勇気が必要なのです。失敗から学ぶことで、良い結果に結びつくこともあるので、失敗を恐れないで。激励も重要です。頑張って。似た様な興味や目標を持ったロールモデルや知り合いを見つけて、どんどん前に進んでください。あなた自身が、世界をより良くした、「あの」女の子になる可能性を持ち合わせているのです。
