Lecturer brief history

Madame Doan Thi Minh Chau began her business carreer in 1987, when Viet Nam adopted the "Doi Moi" policy, switching from the centrally-planned to the market-oriented economy. Former French teacher at the Ho Chi Minh City University, she has been specialized in consultancy for tourism and investment, working for multi-national consortiums operating in Vietnam. Her language skills and professionalism are much appreciated by the quickly expanding foreign business community.

In 1993, she established Minh Chau (Trade and Tours) Co., Ltd., the first 100% privately-owned company of travel services in Viet Nam, to assist foreign visitors with a better understanding of the culture and business climate of the country. Pioneer in the promotion of private sector, she also worked with international development organisations such as CIDA (Canada), SDC (Switzerland)… to stimulate export-oriented business for Vietnamese women entrepreneurs.

One of her main achievements was the coordination of "Discover Vietnam 1996", the first-ever trade and cultural exhibition of Viet Nam in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, with the attendance of 140 Vietnamese entrepreneurs.

Joining the CanAsian Businesswomen's Network in 1997 as Vietnam Country Representative, she devoted her time for the development of women entrepreneurs and coordinated a series of workshops on "exporting products to Canada and North America".

For the past 10 years, she has been attended as speaker, panelist and coordinator of major International Conferences, such as 7th Forum Francophone des Affaires, in line with the Summit of Francophony, in New Brunswick, Canada (1999); APEC WLN 2000, in Brunei Darussalam; "How to Export to NAFTA Markets" Seminar in Ho Chi Minh City (2001); 16th OWIT (Organization of Women in International Trade) World Conference in Miami, Florida, USA (2007), APEC WLN 2008, in Arequipa, Peru.

Executive Summary

During my years of financial and economic news anchoring at TV Tokyo, I interviewed many knowledgeable and influential specialists. As a result, I learned the extent to which Asian countries were booming and world financial markets were growing globally and becoming borderless, especially after 2000. Following my resignation from TV Tokyo in December 2007, I conducted interviews and research in thirty cities in seventeen countries, primarily in Asia. I saw firsthand how, thanks in part to the Internet and globalization, the movement of capital and ideas had become instantaneous and the launching of new businesses had globalized.

I also realized as a media professional the importance of expanding one's knowledge and understanding outside one's own country and seeking out opportunities to engage with other media professionals and businesspeople from other countries with the goal of mutual prosperity. Through my extended career in financial media, I have developed strategic long-term relationships with media professionals and global financial institutions and investors. This network, particularly in the current economic recession, offers access to and an exchange of information with influential individuals, as relates to finance and economics, in countries around the world. Currently, I am organizing several major networking events between the media and private sector, with plans to expand these to include related events, conferences and professional networking opportunities: Asian Women's Economic and Business Conference (AWEC) in November 2009 and New Ventures Meet the Press (NVMP) in October 2009 and January 2010.
