Women in Japan Today 2003

In recent years, women have advanced into occupations traditionally regarded as men's domain, such as taxi and truck drivers and airline pilots. Women are also being dispatched on peace keeping operations, and are performing in a manner that is in no way inferior to men in any of these fields. Moreover, two Japanese women have won Leading Women Entrepreneurs of the World awards, proof that the abilities of Japanese women are held in high esteem.

Not only are there growing opportunities for women challenging new fields, but men are also beginning to participate in housework and childcare, responsibilities traditionally viewed as women's. I believe actions such as these will stimulate both women and men in a positive way, and lead to the revitalization of society.

The Government is pushing ahead with further reforms towards establishment of a gender-equal society, but it is essential that these reforms are understood and accepted by women and men of all generations. We need to engage in lively debate on a future image of a gender-equal society from a wide variety of perspectives, and with long-term ideals. I intend to do all in my power to deepen debate on this matter in the process of realizing a society in which both women and men can participate in the workplace, in the home, and in society.
