Activities of the Liaison Conference for the Promotion of Gender Equality (Égalité Network)

A plenary meeting of the Liaison Conference for the Promotion of Gender Equality (Egalite Network) was held on 23 June 1998. The Liaison Conference consists of 13 intellectuals and 67 representatives of women's groups, business, media, education and other groups; a total of 80 persons. The purpose of the Liaison Conference is to promote cooperation between not only women's groups but also a wide range of other organizations toward the creation of a gender-equal society. At the plenary meeting, points of discussion were clarified in regard to "A Fundamental Law Designed to Promote a Gender-Equal Society" (provisional title) and explanations were made regarding the situation concerning the meetings by the Committee on Violence Against Women, after which information was exchanged on the activities of different groups in regard to gender equality.
The Liaison Conference also has a Planning Committee to handle the planning of conference logistics, etc., which holds Hearing Sessions to provide information to NGOs and solicit NGO viewpoints. In FY1998, themes for these sessions included "A Fundamental Law Designed to Promote a Gender-Equal Society" (provisional title), "The 19th Meeting of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women" and "Outline of the APEC Ministerial Meeting on Women," and so on.
